* The US secretary of state, Dean Rusk, said continued infiltration of men and supplies from North Vietnam to the South, indicated by improved roads on the Ho Chi Minh Trail, justified bombing oil installations in Hanoi and Haiphong. The prime minister, Howard Holt, defied criticism Australia was in the pocket of the US, declaring it was fully justified in being "fulsome" in its support of its ally. It was the week of his "All the way with LBJ" declaration.

* One hundred demonstrators outside the US consulate in Sydney paraded against the bombing. In a demonstration in America, six youths and a girl were arrested after a scuffle.

* With Sydney about to host a match on the Sydney Cricket Ground between Hawthorn and Essendon, it was announced that the crowd would be entertained by the Hawthorn "cheer squad", due to arrive that night on the Spirit of Progress.

* The Crown Employees Appeals Board upheld an appeal by a probationary constable against his dismissal from the police force for boarding at a place where liquor was sold illegally. The constable agreed he had been in the place preparing food when the licensing police arrived but said it was the Lane Cove Junior Rugby League Club premises and he did not think it was an offence for liquor to be sold to "members only".

* Police were highly critical of security at the Callan Park Psychiatric Hospital after a dangerous patient escaped. The man had been charged with shooting at a girl and sent to Long Bay Jail, from where he had been released to Callan Park.
