Overseas Aid Work Honoured

Newcastle Herald

Thursday July 18, 2002

WORKING with street kids in Hanoi in northern Vietnam and training counsellors in concrete community halls with no electricity were challenges Christine Battle relished.

The 33-year-old social worker from Hamilton spent 2 years in Vietnam as a volunteer worker with the International Red Cross.

Ms Battle and two other Novocastrians, Anne Rooke-Frizell from Mayfield and Darren Robert from Warabrook, were recognised with certificates of appreciation yesterday from Newcastle MP Sharon Grierson for their overseas volunteer work. Mr Robert worked in the Sudan and Ms Rooke-Frizell in East Timor.
